Psychoeducational (Psych Ed) Assessments

Our child psychologist, Mark Vickers, offers Psychoeducational assessments at Encompass Holistic Health. Psych Ed assessments can be used for a variety of reasons, and can be helpful with specific accommodations offered at school or other locations for children who need additional supports.

Assessment Process

The assessment process is collaborative, thorough, and structured to ensure the highest clinical utility. The different parts of an assessment may include:

  • 1) An initial intake and comprehensive interview to review developmental, academic, occupational, medical, and social-emotional history, and to define the specific questions the assessment aims to answer.
  •
  • 2) One or more face-to-face testing sessions using standardized, empirically validated instruments. The duration and types of assessments administered varies depending on the referral question.
  • 3) Standardized rating scales completed by yourself and/or others to gather collateral information
  •
  • 4)  Synthesis of all quantitative test data, qualitative observations, and collateral information into a comprehensive, professional psychological report.
  •
  • 5) A meeting to review the diagnostic findings, discuss the individual’s cognitive and/or emotional profile, and collaboratively outline the recommended next steps and interventions and supports to strengthen your capacity to balance daily demands and improve your quality of life.

The goal of the assessment is to help you thrive by providing a clear, personalized path for personal growth and development. Our team will be there every step of the way to support you.

Common Reasons for An Assessment

A Psych Ed assessment is used to give you answers about how you or your child functions, what are your strengths, your challenges, and any help/support you might need. Some common reasons for an assessment are:

Academic Achievement Challenges

Consistent academic achievement challenges despite effort, including those with reading, written expression, or mathematics.

Concerns With Daily Activities

Concerns with activities of daily living and adaptive functioning (e.g., self-care, social communication, understanding of health and safety skills).

Other Chronic Difficulties

Chronic difficulties with sustained attention, task initiation, time management, organization, impulsivity, or motor restlessness that impair daily functioning at school, work, or in relationships.

Persistent Distress & Conflicts

Persistent emotional distress, interpersonal conflict, diagnostic confusion (e.g., differentiating between trauma, mood disorders, or personality dynamics), or a lack of progress in ongoing psychotherapy.

FAQs on Psychoeducational Assessments

  1. Initial Consultation – Your practitioner will take time to understand your health history, symptoms, and goals for care.

  2. Treatment Planning – A personalized plan will be created, including the number and frequency of sessions recommended.

  3. Acupuncture Treatment – Fine, sterile needles are gently placed at specific points on the body. Most people find the process relaxing, and many experience a sense of calm or lightness afterward.

  4. Rest Period – You’ll have time to rest while the needles remain in place, usually for 20–30+ minutes.

  5. Aftercare Guidance – Simple lifestyle or self-care recommendations may be provided to help you maintain results between sessions.

  • Acupuncture is considered safe when performed by a trained professional.

  • We use only single-use, sterile needles in a fully sanitized environment.

  • Certain conditions may require extra precautions, such as:
      • Pregnancy
      • Bleeding disorders or use of blood thinners
      • Recent surgeries or open wounds
      • Certain implanted devices (such as pacemakers)

  • Please let your practitioner know about your full health history before beginning care.

  • Some clients feel improvements after just one session.

  • Acute issues often respond well to 3–5 sessions over a short period.

  • Chronic or long-term conditions may benefit from 8–12 sessions or ongoing maintenance care.

  • Your practitioner will recommend a treatment schedule tailored to your needs.
