Dr. Baxter Hickey

Dr. Baxter Hickey is a chiropractor at Encompass Sports Therapy in Cranston, serving patients and families throughout Southeast Calgary. His practice focuses on family chiropractic care, sports and athletic care, prenatal chiropractic, and the assessment and treatment of neck, mid-back, and low-back pain.

Dr. Hickey attended the University of Calgary, where he completed his Bachelor of Kinesiology before earning his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) in Toronto, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude.

A Passion for Chiropractic and Human Movement

Dr. Hickey’s interest in chiropractic began in 2011 when he was receiving chiropractic care while competing as a high-level Latin ballroom dancer. As an athlete, he became fascinated by how the body moves, performs, adapts, and recovers. That experience ultimately inspired him to pursue a career in chiropractic.

Today, his approach to care is focused on understanding the factors contributing to a patient’s symptoms, providing individualized treatment, and helping patients better understand their bodies. His care may incorporate chiropractic treatment, soft-tissue techniques, rehabilitation and exercise, and patient education based on each individual’s goals and needs.

Family Chiropractic Care

Dr. Hickey enjoys working with patients throughout all stages of life, from newborns and children to adults and seniors. He has completed additional education in newborn, infant, and pediatric chiropractic care and spent part of his clinical internship working at a pediatric wellness clinic.

As a father of two daughters, Dr. Hickey has a particular appreciation for the needs of growing families and enjoys helping parents navigate the physical demands that come with pregnancy, caring for young children, and an active family lifestyle.

Pregnancy & Prenatal Chiropractic Care

Dr. Hickey also provides chiropractic care for patients throughout pregnancy. He has completed additional training in the Webster Technique, which is commonly used by chiropractors who work with pregnant patients.

His goal is to provide individualized care that supports comfort, mobility, and function throughout pregnancy while taking each patient’s stage of pregnancy and individual needs into consideration.

Sports & Athletic Chiropractic Care

As a former competitive ballroom dancer and lifelong active individual, Dr. Hickey particularly enjoys working with athletes and active patients. His experience in high-level dance has given him a personal understanding of the physical demands of training, performance, recovery, and injury prevention.

At Encompass Sports Therapy, he works with athletes across a variety of sports and activity levels. His active lifestyle includes resistance training, cycling, hiking, skiing, and other outdoor activities.

Neck, Mid-Back & Low-Back Pain

A significant part of Dr. Hickey’s practice involves helping patients with common musculoskeletal concerns, including:

  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Mid-back and upper-back pain
  • Low-back pain
  • Headaches associated with the neck
  • Jaw pain
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Sports and activity-related injuries
  • Mobility and movement concerns
  • Motor vehicle accident injuries

Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, Dr. Hickey’s goal is to identify the factors contributing to a patient’s symptoms and develop a treatment plan appropriate for their condition, lifestyle, and goals.

Custom Orthotics & Foot Assessment

Dr. Hickey also provides custom orthotic assessments at the Encompass Cranston location. He uses three-dimensional foot scanning and gait assessment to evaluate foot mechanics and help determine whether custom orthotics may be appropriate for an individual patient.

Custom orthotics may be considered for a variety of foot and lower-extremity concerns and can also be relevant for patients experiencing biomechanical issues affecting the legs, hips, or low back. Encompass currently identifies Dr. Hickey as the Cranston chiropractor providing custom orthotic services.

Compression Stockings

Dr. Hickey also provides compression stocking services for patients who may benefit from graduated compression. This can be particularly useful for individuals who spend significant amounts of time standing or sitting, travel frequently, are active, or are looking for support during pregnancy or everyday activities.

Education & Professional Development

Dr. Hickey has completed extensive training in a variety of chiropractic and soft-tissue techniques, including Activator, Thompson Technique, muscle release therapy, instrument-assisted soft-tissue therapy, orthotic casting, compression stocking fitting and the Webster Technique.

He also works as a clinical instructor with the Canadian Chiropractic Association, helping chiropractic students prepare for their national board examinations.

Life Outside the Clinic

Outside of practice, Dr. Hickey enjoys spending time with his wife and their two daughters. He maintains an active lifestyle through resistance training, cycling, hiking, skiing, and exploring the Rocky Mountains with his family.

His passion for travel and adventure has also taken him on backpacking trips along the Inca Trail, West Coast Trail, and Nootka Trail.

Whether you’re looking for a family chiropractor, pediatric or prenatal chiropractor, sports chiropractor, or help with neck, mid-back, or low-back pain, Dr. Hickey’s goal is to provide personalized, evidence-informed care to help you move, feel, and function at your best.
